British Nationals Win for Quiver Team 2010 - 01/09/2010

The Quiksilver 2010 British Nationals were held at Fistral beach this weekend and we saw local boy and Quiver rider Johnny Fryer taking out the Men's Open Title and to match, Sarah Beardmore winning the Ladies Open title on her Quiver and Nicole Morgan, another Quiver rider taking second place.  With only a small swell on the Saturday, competition conditions were extremely challenging for all concerned. However thankfully,  Sunday saw some improvement in the swell and an onshore wind helped generate some shoulder high waves throughout the day.

The mens final was pretty much an all Cornish affair with Johnny Fryer currently living in Newquay and Ollie Adams (Newquay), Jayce Robison from St Ives and Toby Donachie from St Merryn.  Adding this success to her victory in the English Nationals WQS surfer Sarah Beardmore is having a pretty great season!Well done to all our riders that took part this weekend.Mens Results: 1st Johnny Fryer 2nd Oli Adams 3rd Jayce Robinson 4th Toby Donachie

Quiver Cast 1 - Have Faith - Scotland - 25/08/2010

Welcome to the first Quivercast of 2010....... Featuring Pro surfers Mitch Corbett and Tom Butler. In this first episode the boys travelled north in search of slabs with their 'less than realiable' jetski... 'Bombard'. As with most over excited young surfers the decision was made on a whim without studying the charts and that soon came apparent as the swell didnt hit as expected. A week was spent twidelling our thumbs and crossing our fingers for a glimer of hope on the horizon and then it came...a brief window within the tides and wind where they could use the ski.... after a few practice waves however 'Bombard' decided to show that he wasnt very 'Ard' at all, and starting chocking at the sight of 8ft right handers unloading into 1-2ft of water. Fortunetly the RNLI at Scrabster are very well equiped to help with sick jetski's. We are very thankfull to them for this....

Tom Hits Scottish Waves - 18/08/2010

Newquay’s British surf champion, Tom Butler, has braved the most challenging wave in Fargo, northern Scotland.

Last month, Quiver Surf Boards, (Toms Sponsor’s) supported Tom and his team’s trip to Scotland in the hope that he would crack a particular coast line that is famous amongst the surfing community, in particular in northern Scotland for producing perfect, big, heavy, powerful and intense waves. Due to Tom’s popularity and status in the surfing world, Quiver organised a ‘big wave photo shoot which will be released in this month’s Carve magazine’.

The team of three, which included Newquay born Mitch Corbett, the first person ever to surf this particular wave accompanied Tom to Scotland. In December last year Mitch was in Treliske Hospital in Truro on a life support machine for 5 days due to a severe head injury. Being lucky to be alive, let alone being able to surf again, Mitch ripped up the waves like the best of them.

Tom said, “The trip to Scotland was special for both Mitch and myself, for both of us to be surfing these crazy, scary waves together, shows his strong personality, desire and dedication to get back to where he was before the accident”.

Having had trouble with their jet ski, Tom not one for missing an opportunity decided to paddle the wave and from the left hand side, became the first person to ever accomplish this daring feat. Tom continues; “We have some of the best big wave spot's in the world here in the Great British Isles; I get the most excited when the sea conditions are big and challenging. I’m going to be pushing myself in the bigger stuff a lot this year and can’t wait for the first big swell's to start hitting our coasts. I’ll be setting off on a fair few surf trips over the course of 2010 taking a jet ski (sponsored by Cornwall entertainment) with the intentions of finding the biggest barrels out there to ride”.

Tom has recently launched his own company TB Surfing which allows fans to follow his progress by providing various links to social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and FaceBook.  The new easy to use website will list all of Tom’s events via an online calendar and will offer unique coaching packages by the surfing champion himself.

Tom’s website was built and supported by the Joe Way Appeal team in recognition for Tom’s dedicated support of which he is now an ambassador of. Tom will be supporting the Paddle for Life event in September this year.

Alan Stokes Crowned 2010 Sri Lanka Champion - 06/07/2010

QUIVER TEAM RIDER ALAN STOKES CROWNED THE WINNER AT THE 2010 SRI LANKA CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

The weeks Sri Lanka Champion of Champions Surf Contest saw two new champions, some great weather and perfect conditions. UK Pro Surf Tour Champion Alan Stokes from Newquay and Welsh Champion Beth Mason showed stunning form in 3 to 4 ft conditions to take the top spots on the podium at one of the year’s most prestigious contests.  Organised by the UK Pro Surf Association (UKPSA), the event saw one of the largest ever entries with over 50 contestants travelling from all over the world to bid for this major title at Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka..

This years Champion Alan Stokes, commented, “I am ecstatic to have won this event, after coming 2nd last year and in previous years, it feels likes it has been a long time coming. It has been really nice to have an event with great waves and a really cool atmosphere.  Reubin and I came here three weeks before the event and we both finished in 1st and 2nd so it feels like the training has paid off.”

The swell decreased over the week, offering up some challenging surf for competitors to test their skills and demonstrate to the judges what they can do in the clean conditions.  The variety of moves and action on display was described by Head Judge Esther Spears as, “Definitely impressive – the best seen in many years. This shows a promising time for British surfing.”

The highest scoring wave of the day was from last years champion Alan Stokes, from Newquay. Who got a 9.50 point wave in the semi’s which then lead him into the man on man final against Reubin Pearce.  Alan went onto to win this years Open, 2nd place going to Reubin Pearce (South Africa), 3rd to nineteen year old Stuart Campbell (Woolocombe) and 4th to Reubyn Ash (Bude).

The all Welsh Women on Women final, was a fight to the end. With Beth Mason winning the Sri Lankan Champion of Champions Women’s division by  only a 0.77 lead, leaving Gwen Spurlock to pick up a very close 2nd place.  The local division also saw some great surfing and all the equipment that was used for the competition was kindly donated to them by the sponsors. Throughout the contest training had been given to the locals in judging and other aspects of contest management, and they hope this gift will allow them to run their own contests raising what is already a high standard of surfing in the area.

Green Foam ® arrives in Europe..... - 02/06/2010

Seabase has announced it is to distribute Green Foam® in Europe beginning this summer!

Green Foam blanks are made with a patented process using recycled foam and foam waste. US Blanks has reached an agreement to manufacture Green Foam® blanks using their large range of surfboard moulds and their expertise in foam blowing to further enhance their own green credentials – they are already producing surfboard blanks with some of the lowest emissions in the world from their EPA approved factory in California.

Green Foam blanks will be available from Seabase outlets in France, Portugal and the UK in the most popular blank sizes at a slight price premium over regular foam. Green Foam has a density around that of the current blue density US Blanks foam. “Using Green Foam blanks with our new ISO 10NP resin, the far safer and solvent free Resin Research epoxies, and our water based finish coatings will produce more sustainable surfboards and help placate our own in-house manufacturing concerns with the environmental impact surfboard production causes” says Seabase European Manager Pani Bundy.

“We’re excited to be part of this major change in surfboard manufacturing”.

2nd Round BLU Quiver Win - 25/05/2010

Alex was in action again at the weekend,  2nd round BLU, British Longboard Union held at Saunton, Great conditions and FANTASTIC weather, we were given an incredible display of Longboarding at it's best.

Alex was again in fine form up against the best juniors in the country with three fresh back from the europeans where they finished 1st, 2nd and 6th.

In the Under 16's Alex placed 1st and managed a creditable 4th in the under 18's, Narrowly missing out on a much higher placing, He was up there in the top two at one point but just couldn't find a good enough wave to back his best score up, But was happy to finish 4th behind European  #1 & 2.

Well done to all the guy's and girls and of course judges and helpers, A great comp indeed.
